Women in Leadership

This past week, we had speakers come in and talk to us about diversity in the workplace and how we need to accept it. This was one of my favorite panels to date because of the speakers. At first, when I heard about this subject, I thought they would only be talking about diversity through race or gender, but I was happy to see that I was wrong. While these women did focus on diversity through race, what they were saying could apply to any situation with diversity.
I learned a lot from these women about confidence, acceptance, and how to deal with a stressful situation. For the confidence, they said that we should always make sure to be the best we can be. If we come into something feeling prepared and making sure that we did our research, then we will have more confidence and people will be more likely to listen to us. For acceptance, they said how it's not only about accepting people but about making yourself more open to new ideas and always being willing to change your ideas or ways of working in order to better suit your situation. For the stressful situation, I asked "What should we should do if we're working with someone who is discriminating against someone else?" They said we should try to talk to them if there is a right time, or we should just live our lives as an example of how we should act and then they might want to act more like us.
I also enjoyed getting to talk with the women afterwards because in the classroom I feel like we're always rushed and so we never have any time to ask the women some questions. So it was nice to be able to talk with them and ask them questions about their careers and how they became so successful. I learned a lot from this session and so it was my favorite.
